When is root canal treatment necessary?

Infection is the primary reason root canal treatment is recommended. At the centre of every tooth lies a soft tissue known as the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected or dies — often as a result of deep decay, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth — bacteria can begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. Left untreated, this infection can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue, causing serious complications.

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

Root canal treatment is typically completed over one or two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case and the extent of the infection. Here is what you can expect:

Numbing – First, the dentist numbs the area using a local anaesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable before any work begins. Rubber dam isolation is also applied around the tooth to prevent contamination from saliva and to protect the airway.

Creating an opening – The dentist uses a small tool to create the ‘canal’, a narrow tunnel through the crown of the tooth to reach the infected pulp chamber below.

Removal – Your dentist will then carefully remove the infected tissue, nerves, and any debris through the canal, before thoroughly flushing and cleaning the area to eliminate all traces of bacteria.

Filling – Next, the root is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, and the opening is filled in and sealed. In many cases, a dental crown is later recommended to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.

Will it hurt to have a root canal?

Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring the area is completely numb before any work begins. Most patients are surprised to find that the procedure itself is no more uncomfortable than having a standard filling.
