Helping your child to establish a good dental hygiene routine will help support their oral health in later life.

As a parent, what role can I play in maintaining my child’s oral health?

It is important to teach your child how to care for their oral health from a young age. You’ll need to begin brushing for them when their milk teeth first appear, at approximately six months of age. As your child develops, they will begin to brush for themselves and you may initially supervise their practice.

We recommend using fluoride toothpaste to brush twice a day. Brushing should last around two minutes and children should spit rather than rinse for the fluoride to be effective.

At what age should I bring my child for their first dental appointment?

Your child should first see a dentist once their milk teeth have begun to appear. We recommend scheduling their first appointment at around six months of age.

My child is scared of the dentist – what should I do?

Children are easily influenced by those around them. If your child is nervous about attending a dental appointment, it is important to reassure them and to approach the experience with positivity. For our part, we will warmly welcome your child into the practice and strive to make all dental appointments as relaxed as possible.
