Several types of filling exist. Your dentist will be able to advise on the most appropriate type of filling for your personal needs.

What are the different types of filling?

There are three common types of filling, each one crafted from a different material. An amalgam filling is made from a blend of inexpensive metals, including tin and copper. Composite fillings are white in colour and made from a blend of resin and glass. Lasting between 3 and 10 years, this type of filling is popular due to the fact that it blends better with a patient’s natural teeth.

Glass ionomer fillings are also white in colour and crafted from powdered glass which forms a strong chemical bond with the tooth. Due to the material’s flexibility, it is most often used for interim fillings.

Why might I require a filling?

You are most likely to need a filling if you have a cavity. In addition to tooth decay, the most common reasons for fillings include abrasion (general wear) and acid erosion from food and drink.

What is the process of getting a filling?

Your tooth will first need to be prepared for the filling by your dentist. The cavity will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any bacteria that may be present, with any decayed parts of the tooth carefully removed. The tooth is then filled with whichever material your dentist deems to be most appropriate.

How can I reduce my chance of acquiring cavities?

Good dental hygiene is the primary way to minimise your risk of cavities. Maintain a strong personal routine inclusive of twice daily brushing and flossing. An antibacterial mouthwash may also be beneficial (this is most effective when used in between meals).

Regular visits to your dentist are recommended to monitor your oral health, with bi-annual appointments with a qualified hygienist also advocated.
